There are probably thousands of artists in Myanmar. Most of them are graduates of School of Fine Arts in either Yangon or Mandalay. Some are self-practiced while the others learnt privately under the welknown artists.
Due to the economic hardship of the country most people are not able to have time and money and the mood to destinguish and feel the taste and meaning of the artworks. The artists who are also ones of the general public could not find a decent price for their piece of creation.
Normally the painter who is determined to feed himself ( and his family ) with paintworks needs to go through a long, dusty and often tricky road of self marketing. Some approach the magazines to use them as the cover sheet illustrators, etc.
Artists usually ask permission at shops to put their creations for sale. Normally the creators will get payment only after their works have been sold. Since there have been not many people who have time and money to appreciate the artworks the life of an artist in Myanmar have never been smooth.
Some young artists, having unable to feed their family, finally go abroad to work as sailers at sea or dish cleaners at restaurants, etc. The others who are not able to find a channel ( and broker's money ) to go abroad eat the problems at home. It is not rare to see an excellent artist in his rusitc single room home of 8 feet by 8 feet eating only boiled rice day by day.
With the country's opening up in the recent years to the outside world, now there are chances for the artists to expose their works to the world. There are a few art galleries in Yangon and Mandalay showcasing the creations of the artists. Some overseas exhibitions have been arranged in Singapore and Thailand. Together with this opening up the income of artists seem to increase by a little. There are still some domestic and overseas brokers who have good connection with the circle of end users of artworks, taking lot of profit out of the hard life of the artists.
After all the artists in Myanmar (Burma) will always be together with the general public.
